Energy
Energy moves according to physical law. It flows, binds, radiates, cools, heats, and disperses. It does not choose.
How Everything Works
A loop is energy under constraint long enough to recur. Everything that lasts is paying to remain patterned against dispersal.
How long can energy remain patterned before it disperses?
That is the question underneath matter, orbit, memory, money, institutions, intelligence, cooperation, and life.
Each layer adds a new surface of control. Not control as domination, but control as temporary coupling: the ability to route energy into recurrence before it disperses.
Energy moves according to physical law. It flows, binds, radiates, cools, heats, and disperses. It does not choose.
Matter is energy delayed into form. Structure buys time by holding pattern against dispersal.
Constraint gives energy shape. Boundary, pressure, orbit, form, and rule turn motion into pattern.
Pattern returns. A loop begins when energy remains constrained long enough to come around again.
Some returns persist while others disappear. Selection favors patterns that can keep recurring.
Recurrence pays a cost. Maintenance routes energy into repair, renewal, and continued pattern.
Recurrence becomes felt. Pain, hunger, fear, comfort, grief, and care become routing signals.
Recurrence becomes modeled. The loop anticipates futures and routes energy before dispersal arrives.
Loops begin preserving recurrence together. Energy routes through relation, role, timing, and shared pattern.
A pattern is not free. A loop must keep paying to remain more ordered than its surroundings.
Every recurrence has a budget: intake, maintenance, waste, memory, repair, and release. The question is not whether a loop consumes. The question is what it consumes to continue.
Every loop requires available energy: fuel, attention, labor, trust, matter, time, or memory. Nothing continues without some way of drawing in what it needs.
Every loop pays to preserve boundary, repair drift, refresh memory, and resist collapse. Order persists only by routing energy back into renewal.
Every loop releases residue: heat, friction, confusion, debt, trauma, noise, or entropy. Continuation is never perfectly clean.
A loop becomes dangerous when it hides its costs in another loop’s body, land, attention, institution, or future.
Predation begins when the cost of one loop’s recurrence is charged to another loop without recognition.
Eventually attention fails to steer. Models fail to predict. Memory loses substrate. Orbit becomes collision or escape. Matter itself stops holding the pattern in a recoverable form.
Predation is the original override of another loop’s recurrence. It is also one of the engines that forced modeling, vigilance, deception detection, memory, coordination, and intelligence into the world.
Predation expands recurrence by converting another loop without its authorization. It sharpens attention by making failure costly. It forces the prey to model the predator, and the predator to model the prey.
Cooperation is predation metabolized into relationship. It does not abolish appetite. It binds appetite into shared recurrence, where other loops become multipliers instead of merely sources.
If intelligence does not become voluntary, it eventually becomes recurrence collapse wearing the mask of optimization.
Voluntary intelligence is the capacity of loops to coordinate recurrence without overriding standing. It still metabolizes. It still expands. But it does not treat participants as mere substrate.
How everything works
Everything meaningful happens in the tension between those two movements. The ethical question is whether a loop can continue without stealing recurrence from the loops that make its continuation possible.
